A couple months ago we discussed The Three Different Types of ERP Manufacturing Systemsand the specific needs of each. In this post we’d like to dive a little deeper into discrete manufacturing and discuss the benefits of selecting the right ERP software.

All ERP software for manufacturing are not the same, and it is very important that discrete manufacturers avoid implementing a process manufacturing solution. While it may look like it can meet your needs, chances are the end result will be headaches! You’ll undoubtedly have to create a large number of workarounds, and continuously struggle with a lack of traceability.

The needs of process and discrete manufacturers are very different. Discrete manufacturers require the use of Bill of Materials (or BOM’s), and assemble finished products made up of other whole parts. The BOM then provides the base unit of measure in addition to all of the subsequent assemblies and sub assemblies.

Discrete manufacturers require ERP software that fully integrates with their other business systems, and processes. The right solution will provide for:

  • Just-in-Time (JIT) Inventory Management
  • Improved Scheduling Management

Furthermore, discrete manufacturing ERP software should automate:

  • Customer Order Management
  • Materials Sourcing
  • Resource Sourcing
